Online Dating Virgin: The First Week of Mobile Dating

Kyle - Mobile Dating BootCampHi. It’s Kyle again with my date update.

Alright. It’s been just over a week now and I’ve got enough stories to fill more than 100 blog posts. It’s been a trip. Since it’s been such a trip ,I decided to spill these posts into a fun story and then give thoughts on the applications for those looking  into which they should use.

Story of the week.

I was sitting at home one evening and received an alert on my phone that “GirlUser123” (not her real name) had visited my profile. Then a few moments later another notification that she wanted to meet with me. It’s late, but I’m thinking to myself ok, I’ll bite. So in return and I check out her profile, and in the next moment…I receive a message from GirlUser123. Now I’m with you all thinking whoa, Kyle…this is happening way to fast and looks shady. But I’m a nice guy so it dove in and started talking. Below is our conversation.

GirlUser123: “Hi”

Me: “Hey there”

GirlUser123: “Hi send me $400”

Me: “Ha seriously?”

My first reaction was simple this girl is crazy to think I would send her anything. Secondly, really? Really? I mean…you couldn’t push the conversation further BEFORE you tried to get money out of me (which I wouldn’t have even thought twice about not sending). Lesson hear kids…there are scammers out there on these sites just as everyone on the Internet so beware.

Review of Badoo.

Badoo is a well designed and developed mobile app. If you have an iPhone you won’t have any issues using it. The interface is super clean and works the way text messaging, email, and everything on an iPhone works. Their website is also done very well. Over I was very impressed with the amount of effort put in all around for their users.

Now I know not everyone wants to hear about the review of the product, but there is probably something you do want to know. That being the features that they offer you. With Badoo’s mobile app you’re able to see who’s visiting your profile, possible matches based off their algorithm (which needs a little work in my opinion), your favorites, and probably the neatest feature – people nearby. Most features are self explanatory however the people nearby feature is pretty neat. Badoo has build in a feature that allows you to see other users around in a given radius (5, 10, 20, or 50 miles). The cool thing is that it works anywhere. You could be in one city looking for date and then go to another city and meet someone who is just looking to dance.

In addition to some pretty neat features Badoo has also built a gamification reward system within their app. So as you complete a profile, find a match, etc you receive coins. These coins can be used to place you higher in search, gifts, and other fun things.

Overall, not a bad app. Badoo seems to have gotten it right.

Joe’s Date Update – Mobile Dating BootCamp

Joe - Mobile Dating BootCampHi, it’s Joe checking in with a Date Update for Mobile Dating Bootcamp.

I had a chance to play with the Blendr mobile app.

I wasn’t sure how multiple dating apps would differentiate themselves. Religion, seriousness of relationship and ethnicity seem to be the common boundaries for the online sites.

It became quickly apparent that by knowing your geolocation, a whole new world of possibilities are available. From the casual “you’re down the street from me” to the “we both like doing the same things and live nearby” – Blendr has captured this modality. You can search nearby people for similar hobbies. It’s a breeze to set up if you’re willing to import your social media profiles. I wasn’t, but it was still quick to put in your info.

At the time I first tried it, I was not near any major city and it was a beautiful Saturday. I searched without any filters and didn’t find anyone within 25 miles. There were only about 20 people on the service then. That’s really the drawback. If Blendr can’t get traction of their app with users, it’s just not that sticky. I’m not going to commit a lot of time for 20 people. I’m glad they’re not like some other sites that add fake profiles to get you to join. I’d like to check back with Blendr in a few months and see if their user base has grown. Definitely a great idea though.

Online Dating Virgin: The Beginning – Kyle

Kyle - Mobile Dating BootCampHi. I’m Kyle.

This is a new area of dating for myself. Even thought I’ve moved to a few new cities in my life, I’ve never really dabbled into online dating – especially on a mobile platform. However I will say that I think it can be a great place to meet people and that it can work. It just takes a little this and a little of that to make it work. As we’ve all seen or know someone who has a love story that started online. With our lives becoming more socially integrated online, we’ll just see those stories increase. High five to all those online love success stories.

Similar to everyone else I got tasked with testing out a few of the online dating sites, but particularly their mobile apps. As I quickly discovered some of them have it and other’s you should just stay on their website. My two sites were Badoo and Zoosk. Both rate high In the online dating worlds and have loads of users.

Let’s just say week one was greatly interesting with both the product testing and their users…

Franklin’s Date Update – Mobile Dating BootCamp

Franklin - 27Hi, It’s Franklin. I’m checking in with a Date Update after one week of using the mobile dating apps.

I’ve read that online dating is a numbers game for men. The more messages you send, the more likely you are to receive a response. That has worked for me in the past, but getting any response isn’t the same as getting the exact response I want. That calls for a more tailored message on me to get the conversation started. MeetMoi and Skout vary in their ability to quickly send out messages.

So far, I think that Skout has an usability issue. Why do you have a chat button on the person’s profile name if it doesn’t work? I keep clicking it thinking I’m opening a chat to the person, but instead it takes me to a screen to add friends. Not quite an intuitive button, and I lose the profile each time!

I like MeetMoi. Fortunately I can get into the profile view and then click left/right to scroll through people and send them a quick message. Don’t understand the subject field. This is a text message, not a love letter. The subject is almost always understood. But I can definitely shuffle quickly through the profiles.
I’ll be checking out eHarmony this week and will be reporting in, but so far I like what I’ve seen after downloading the mobile app.
Hopefully there’s a feature out there that can help turn this number’s game around—so that I can have a quality over quantity kind of experience! No real substantive conversations yet. Maybe I need better opening liners than, “What’s your favorite restaurant in LA,” and “Nice profile picture, do you have any hobbies?” The profiles sometimes give me few clues to strike up a conversation!
I’m looking forward to the Mobile Dating Focus Group at iDate/Mobile Dating Conference at the SLS Hotel later this week!

Mobile Dating BootCamp According to Jen

JenHello single men on my iPhone! Mobile dating is definitely has been a fun way to break up my day. I get to browse profiles of cute single guys or see who has been checking me out!

I’ve been assigned OKCupid (OKC) and MeetMoi.

Let’s start with OKC. I like that the profiles allow users to be as detailed as you want to be. I also like that users can upload up to 10 pictures. OKC also gives you a “Quivermatch” of 3 matches based on how you answer your questions. This is nice because I’m always on the go, and this feature does the work for you. If you don’t like your Quivermatch, you can simply remove them and the system will find you new matches. One feature on OKC that I don’t want to use is “Locals”. You can broadcast a message to your potential matches to let them know you’re free, or suggest a place to meet. I’m not that aggressive and I don’t like the idea of just randomly meeting someone before getting to know them. I’m more of the “let’s take some time and get to know each other by exchanging some emails before we meet in person” type of woman.

On MeetMoi, the user interface is simple and intuitive. I have noticed, though, that most of the fellas on this site tend to only upload 1-4 pictures. I’m a visual person. If I am meeting you on cyberspace, I want to see more photos! MeetMoi doesn’t ask questions to the users like OKC, so I’m judging off of minimal photos, short profile descriptions, and user names.

So far, no dates set yet.  However, I’ve been sending winks on MeetMoi and rating profiles on OKC on the men that do spark my interested. We shall see!
