Date Update from Franklin – Mobile Dating BootCamp

Franklin - Mobile Dating BootCampHi, it’s Franklin again checking in from Mobile Dating BootCamp.

So for the last two weeks I have been continuing to use the eHarmony app for the iPad. I was pretty skeptical of the guided communication process when I last checked in, but it’s starting to grow on me. No burden of creating an ice breaker, the ice breakers are built in.

I’ve managed to work my way through the guided communication pretty quickly with some women. I like the “Must Haves and Can’t Stands” step where we send 10 traits that we think we cannot live with and 10 more that we cannot live without in a prospective mate. As soon as I see, “Family” and “Kids” and “Children” on that list, I have to close the match. It’s just not what I want to have as part of the dating conversation right now.

I have managed to get through one complete guided communication with one woman and she seems like a catch. Looks like next is the secure phone call! Did I mention the app is delicious? I can’t stop using it. It’s really a super easy and elegant way to browse profiles.

Post iDate Date Update from Franklin

Franklin - 27Hi It’s Franklin.

What a terrific panel on Friday at the idate Mobile Dating Conference! It was phenomenal appearing before an audience of people dedicated to mobile and online dating. My mom always says that if you’re going to complain about a problem, then complain to someone who could act to resolve the problem. Well there were definitely some great points of feedback on Friday from everyone—and in front of people who would actually take our feedback and run with it!

Julie Spira was kind enough to let me tackle eHarmony, one of the crown jewels in the online dating world. The iPad app is so delicious. It gives the experience of all of the needed major options laid out on a table. Navigation is super simple, and the animated transitions are seamless, and setting up a profile was painless with a guided wizard walking through the key points of information needed.

Perhaps that summarizes the eHarmony experience: guided. They insist upon grabbing the user’s hand every step of the process. For example once you have decided to send a message with a user, they take you through Guided Communication. It’s a series of questions that you send to a user to see if they will respond, everything from “How many books did you read last year?” to “What are some of the most important marriage issues to you?”

I guess some people need some help with communication off the bat. Personally, I am far more used to introducing myself to someone in my own way based off of what they have in their profile. However this process takes the burden off of me to come up with an icebreaker—they are already there!

Mobile Dating – Looking for Mr. Right

Payal - 26Hi everyone, it’s Payal with a date update about my Mobile Dating Bootcamp experience.

I’ve been diligently using both OkCupid and Badoo since my last post. Now with less than 28 hours until the iDate conference, I’m still looking for Mr. Right.

OkCupid still seems to have a better selection of men (and women for those of you looking!) than Badoo. Outside of my personal preferences, men on Badoo seem to have nothing to say except “hi” and makes my experience more like an instant messenger chat experience (like AIM or Gchat). It is also disappointing that there aren’t better filters like interests so I can have better luck in meeting someone.

I’ve been sending notes to guys on OkCupid and it doesn’t seem to be successful. Either they want to be the first to start a conversation with a woman or maybe I’m just not their type, who knows…? At first if you don’t succeed, try try again :-) So I’m still trying!

Looking forward to iDate!

Online Dating Virgin: The First Week of Mobile Dating

Kyle - Mobile Dating BootCampHi. It’s Kyle again with my date update.

Alright. It’s been just over a week now and I’ve got enough stories to fill more than 100 blog posts. It’s been a trip. Since it’s been such a trip ,I decided to spill these posts into a fun story and then give thoughts on the applications for those looking  into which they should use.

Story of the week.

I was sitting at home one evening and received an alert on my phone that “GirlUser123” (not her real name) had visited my profile. Then a few moments later another notification that she wanted to meet with me. It’s late, but I’m thinking to myself ok, I’ll bite. So in return and I check out her profile, and in the next moment…I receive a message from GirlUser123. Now I’m with you all thinking whoa, Kyle…this is happening way to fast and looks shady. But I’m a nice guy so it dove in and started talking. Below is our conversation.

GirlUser123: “Hi”

Me: “Hey there”

GirlUser123: “Hi send me $400”

Me: “Ha seriously?”

My first reaction was simple this girl is crazy to think I would send her anything. Secondly, really? Really? I mean…you couldn’t push the conversation further BEFORE you tried to get money out of me (which I wouldn’t have even thought twice about not sending). Lesson hear kids…there are scammers out there on these sites just as everyone on the Internet so beware.

Review of Badoo.

Badoo is a well designed and developed mobile app. If you have an iPhone you won’t have any issues using it. The interface is super clean and works the way text messaging, email, and everything on an iPhone works. Their website is also done very well. Over I was very impressed with the amount of effort put in all around for their users.

Now I know not everyone wants to hear about the review of the product, but there is probably something you do want to know. That being the features that they offer you. With Badoo’s mobile app you’re able to see who’s visiting your profile, possible matches based off their algorithm (which needs a little work in my opinion), your favorites, and probably the neatest feature – people nearby. Most features are self explanatory however the people nearby feature is pretty neat. Badoo has build in a feature that allows you to see other users around in a given radius (5, 10, 20, or 50 miles). The cool thing is that it works anywhere. You could be in one city looking for date and then go to another city and meet someone who is just looking to dance.

In addition to some pretty neat features Badoo has also built a gamification reward system within their app. So as you complete a profile, find a match, etc you receive coins. These coins can be used to place you higher in search, gifts, and other fun things.

Overall, not a bad app. Badoo seems to have gotten it right.

John’s Story: Online dating in 2011 – Not sure what to make of it…

John T - Mobile Dating BootcampHi, It’s John with a date update on my Mobile Dating BootCamp experience.

I should start by revealing something rather personal about myself that might be a turn off to many readers – I am new to online dating. Honestly the thought of meeting someone virtually has always been a bit off-putting to me. Thus far it has been fascinating to be immersed in this world where people bear so much of themselves in the hopes to connect with that special someone (or in the case of one OkCupid user I stumbled upon, just a quick hookup to pass the time).

It was strange that OkCupid wanted to know if I thought nuclear war would be fun (seriously, is this helping me find my soul mate?). In the interest of being fair and balanced my experience has not been entirely negative, I was excited to discover some girls who seemed very cool and interesting. So perhaps there is hope for this old school dude in the fast and furious world of cyber-dating.

Overall, I would say that the mobile experience with all the services I have checked out is lacking and needs to focus more on connectivity for nearby users. The problem is that someone needs to be using that particular app and that’s a tough sell.

John will be a panelist at the Mobile Dating Conference Focus Group led by online dating expert Julie Spira. He’ll be talking  about which mobile app he liked best and his overall experience of the apps. Click here to visit John’s Mobile Dating BootCamp page and like us at
